Make Your Own Mini-cooler/Aircon

As summer time comes in the Philippines, temperature relatively increases. At times, even at nighttime it still feels hot. Constant body hydration is very important especially on hot summer days in order to lessen heat stroke and minimize dehydration. Thus, nothing beats a cold and refreshing drink.

But students who are living in a boarding house do not have complete and easy access for cold drinks especially there are no refrigerators installed in their room and sometimes stores were already closed at the times we needed most, although there were some ATM (Automatic Tubig Machine) installed in some places, this still not a guarantee.

With this in mind, I want to make a mini peltier cooling system. Unlike refrigerator, which uses refrigerant in their system to cool foods and drinks, this mini peltier cooling system uses a peltier which is a solid-state active heat pump which transfers heat from one side of the device to the other, with consumption of electrical energy. This mini peltier coolong system provides ‘cleaner’ way in performing its cooling function and at the same time easy to make.

 What Peltier Device looks like

Peltier Effect is one of the important transport of thermoelectricity. It is when an electric current passes through two dissimilar materials such as metals or semiconductors that are connected at two junctions, heat will be absorbed at one junction and liberated at the other junction. As a result, one junction cools off, while other heats up depending on the direction of the current.

There are lots of sites explaining the thermoelectricity phenomenon and I'm not here to tackle it in detailed. I'm just here to show you how I made the mini peltier cooler.

The peltier I used for my mini peltier cooling system was TEC12715 it is a 225W peltier which really gets hot in its hot side. It uses a 12V with max current of 15A.
 Using Ice cold water

The picture above, i submerged the heatsink in an ice cold water. A droplet of water became ice in just 5 seconds. WHOA!

My mini peltier cooler final setup

Done! My mini peltier cooler final set-up. I purchased a styrofoam container, and made a hole on its lid and place the peltier, heatsink on it.

MATERIALS USED:
1 - peltier device 225W
1- Computer Power Supply 600W
1- Styrofoam container
1- Heatsink (there is a guide on how to get a heatsink on a specific load)
1- water container

CAUTION:
I am planning in changing the water container of the mini peltier cooling system by fan soon, since it is not praticable to use. I also noticed that the mini peltier cooler only takes 5 minutes for the ice-cold water to cool the hot side before it goes hot. Thus I am planning in decreasing the wattage of my mini peltier cooler soon. Thanks
